Texas Hold Em - Betting to Win

As soon as you start playing Texas Hold Em you should quickly come to realize that there is practically a game with the game when it comes to betting as there are four rounds of betting in any given hand. This gives you ample opportunity to play a wide range of games with your opponent at each stage of the betting process and of course for them to play games with you.

The way to negotiate the Texas Hold Em betting minefield is simple as you have to bet with a goal in mind. This goal does not always have to result in you winning the pot as there are other things you can accomplish with tactical betting that will help you in the game overall.

Texas Hold Em is not so much a game of individual hands but rather a process where the end goal is to end up with the largest pot even if it means taking a few losses on the way. There are times when you will want to bet low just to see how your lower than average hand is going to pan out and there are other times when you may want to bet larger amounts to disguise the fact that your hand is not as good as it should be in an attempt to force the other players to fold.

Most serious player tend to go somewhere in between keeping their bets consistently in the middle irrespective of whether they have a stronger hand or not. This method has several advantages as firstly you are not telegraphing to the other players the strength of your hand through your betting and secondly if you do decide to change it up and suddenly bet more heavily on one particular hand the effect of your sudden change in betting will have a greater psychological impact on the other players than if you have been betting all over the place all game. Using this strategy requires restraint for it to have maximum impact when you want it to.

The key point to always have at the forefront of your mind whatever betting strategy you choose is to know your own limit. This does not just mean knowing how much you can afford to lose although of course this is a very significant part of it, it also means knowing your own physical limits as tiredness, over consumption of alcoholic beverages, particularly at home, both of which can affect your judgment and lead you to make costly mistakes which can cost you the hand and your pride.

The downside of the multiple rounds of betting is that should you lose your concentration or become over confident due to too much alcohol or too little sleep, the bets can quickly add up without you realizing and you could be quickly end up too deeply in the pot with a less than average hand with no way out other than to lose your bankroll.
